Each street forms gradually from the activity of groups of neighbors, who, together, shape the space outside their lot and make it pleasant and useful

The result is that streets are not uniform bands of equal-width space, but rather a patchwork of wedges, squares, and narrower street-like places, loosely connected, forming space that the families themselves have created.
