EVOLUTION OF PEDESTRIAN SPACE, GREEN SPACE, BUILDING VOLUMES, AND CAR SURFACES (DRIVING AND PARKING)

This is a very powerful sequence which allows people to manage the simultaneous, step by step growth of space and volume, in such a way that pedestrians, buildings, gardens, and cars, remain in balance.

The step-by-step process repeats one cycle of four instructions, many times over. It may be visualized as a process of placing first yellow (pedestrian), then green (garden), then gray (building), and then red (parking and narrow looped roads).

1

  • YELLOW: Place the next bit of pedestrian space, in such a way that the pedestrian network is extended, connectivity is increased, and either the addition, or the whole which that addition completes, has a beautiful shape and is positive, as space. The pedestrian space, because it belongs to everyone, comes first.

2

  • GREEN: Now place some individual private garden, with respect to trees, slope, view, sun, and choose a garden which is worth while in itself, and able to remain so when a building placed next to it.

3

  • GRAY: Now place the next building, in such a way that the building and its wings and parts, help to shape and enclose, the areas of yellow and green that have been created.

4

  • RED: Finally, place the necessary (minimum) amount of asphalt surface for cars. This comes last and must be allowed to find its way as the least important thing, not the most important. it gets what is left over, when all the other more important things have been placed successfully.

Now repeat this cycle, again and agin, making useful small pieces, as you go, and applying the same ideas continually.
