Stafford County Virginia, southwest of Washington DC, encompasses 277 square miles. It is bordered by two tidal rivers flowing to the Chesapeake Bay. the Potomac River on the east and the Rappahannock River on the south. The terrain ranges from sea level to gently rolling hills up to 425 feet. Almost two-thirds of the county remains forested. Historic Fredericksburg lies just across the Rappahannock River to the south.
The Quantico Marine Corps Base occupies 51.2 square miles of Stafford along its northern border.
The county is experiencing rapid population growth, and pressure on development of new housing. At present the county makes available only three major types of housing: single family tract houses, row-housing, and cookie-cutter multi-family apartment buildings.
